The components and limits of a flood monitoring system.
Measure conditions in the field
Water level and rainfall sensors can send readings through a communication network to a monitoring platform. Sensor placement, calibration and power supply affect the quality of the data.
Design useful alerts
Thresholds should be agreed with the responsible team and checked against local conditions. Operators need to know what an alert means, how to verify it and who will respond.
Test the whole chain
A warning is useful only if readings arrive on time and reach the people who act on them. Test data gaps, network loss, notification delivery and escalation procedures before relying on the system.
